Start-up and commissioning
Default state
When you remove the battery tag from your monitoring station the battery becomes connected and the station will start broadcasting the Wi-Fi name CC_MS_1. The stations clock will not be set. In this state, it will ignore any set wake period and will be on as long as it has charge. It is important to note that if a station does not have any solar charge for 8-10 days it may revert to this state. In this case, the unit will turn on when it has been able to charge for a little while.
Commissioning
- Attach the antenna, remove the battery tag and connect the solar panels.
- Put your phone in flight mode, open Wi-Fi and connect to the "CC_MS_1" network. If your phone displays a message with some options like Always connect, Only this time etc. We suggest selecting Only this time. Otherwise your phone may auto connect to the nest box Wi-Fi. The station will not sleep while your phone is connected and this can cause it to run out of battery.
- Open the Comfy Creatures Monitor app. If the network connection help page is displayed, click Retry connection.
- Before the nest box is installed in a tree, test it by streaming video etc.
- Give the station a unique Wi-Fi name. This is important as you may have more than one station within range. The prefix, "CC" in the default Wi-Fi also sets the image watermark and controls the pin required for features like the natural light, alarm and settings menu. Plus the prefix assists with identifying and filtering when using the Data Dashboard. The default "CC" prefix has no pin. Contact Comfy Creatures to select a project prefix and have a pin set. The suffix, "1" in the default name denotes the nest box number for multi station projects.
- Open the settings menu and select Set SSID.
- Enter your project prefix and set the nest box number.
- When you click save, the station will reboot with the new Wi-Fi name and the Comfy Creatures Monitor app and your phone will no longer be connected to the station.
- Open your phone's Wi-Fi and connect to the new station Wi-Fi.
- Return to the Comfy Creatures Monitor app.
- Set the station time.
- Open the Settings menu.
- Click Set time.
- Click Now.
- Click Save.
- Commission your nest box. The commissioning wizard captures variables of the nest box and its installation. This is coupled with the photos and environmental data captured as observations. Together, this data makes up the public database at https://api.comfycreatures.com.au/
- Open the Settings menu.
- Click Commission.
- Work through the wizard and capture the variables. You don't have to enter all of the fields and you can update any field at a later time. Previously entered data will autofill except for the commission photo.
- You can now take observations. It is recommended to take a quick observation to baseline your nest box database. From the main app buttons:
- Start the stream.
- Turn on your preferred lighting.
- Take a quick observation.
- Set your station's wake times. On a full charge, the station will broad cast its Wi-Fi network and be accessible for six to eight hours. If one of the stations solar panels is in full sun, it will fully charge within four hours. To make sure your station is available when you visit, minimise the wake period. For private installations we suggest a one hour wake period each day. For public installations where one of the panels gets full sun for several hours a day you may comfortably have two, two hour wake periods. For example, when people are going for their morning or afternoon walks. Note that outside of any wake period the station will not broadcast its Wi-Fi network and it won't be available for monitoring as it is in deep-sleep. We suggest that you set all stations on a project site to the same wake periods for ease of use. All stations will wake at 12pm for 15 minutes. This is a fixed maintenance session that cannot be changed.
- Open the Settings menu.
- Click Wake Schedule.
- Set the start and the end time for the wake period.
- If you want a second wake period, click on the toggle button to enable it and similarly set the start and end times.
- Carefully check the wake times before saving.
- Once you disconnect from the station's Wi-Fi, the station will go to sleep if it is outside of it's wake periods.
Congratulations, commissioning complete!
